  Subject: Gregory Canyon Landfill update - SB 833
   
  Hi, everyone.  As some of you already know, NRDC, Pala, and several other tribes and groups are working with State Senator Juan Vargas to pass a state bill, Senate Bill 833 (SB 833), that would block the construction and operation of the proposed Gregory Canyon Landfill.  We are happy to report that yesterday the bill passed out of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee on a 5-2 vote.  Senators Pavley, Lowenthal, Blakeslee, Strickland, and Hancock voted for the bill, while Senators Kehoe and Simitian voted no on the bill.
   
  The bill goes next to the Senate Appropriations Committee and then eventually will go to a floor vote.  We will send out another update soon to solicit support letters from groups and tribes who would like to support the bill but haven’t done so yet, and will continue to keep you all posted as this important bill winds its way through the legislative process.  In the meantime, please let me know if you have any questions.
